Preventive Care Guide for Heavy Industrial Reverse Osmosis Plants

> Direct Answer: The key to maximizing industrial Reverse Osmosis (RO) plant life and preventing catastrophic membrane fouling is adhering to a daily operating log (recording differential pressures, permeate flow, and TDS), replacing 5-micron pre-filter cartridges whenever differential pressure exceeds 15 PSI (1.0 bar), and conducting Clean-In-Place (CIP) chemical cleaning before normalized permeate flow drops by 10% to 15%.


1. Daily Maintenance Checklist

Record the following operating parameters once every 8-hour shift on a standardized plant log sheet:

1. Feed & Reject Pressures: Monitor booster pump discharge pressure and concentrate reject pressure.

2. Differential Pressure (Δ P): Measure pressure drop across membrane stages (P_{\tfeed} - P_{\treject}). If Δ P increases by > 15%, fouling is occurring.

3. Permeate Flow Rate & TDS: Verify output liters-per-hour and ensure salt rejection remains above 97%.

4. Antiscalant Dosing Level: Check chemical dosing tank levels and inspect metering pump stroke rates.

5. Raw Water Pre-Treatment Backwash: Execute multi-media sand filter and activated carbon filter backwash daily to purge trapped silt and organic sediment.


2. Weekly & Monthly Service Tasks

  • Weekly: Inspect cartridge filter housing. Replace 5-micron spun polypropylene sediment filter cartridges every 2 to 4 weeks, or whenever feed pressure drop across the housing exceeds 15 PSI.
  • Monthly: Test feed water SDI (Silt Density Index). SDI must remain strictly below 3.0 to prevent colloidal fouling of spiral-wound polyamide membranes.
  • Quarterly: Inspect high-pressure vertical multistage pump mechanical seals, motor couplings, and oil lubricated bearings for thermal wear or vibration.

3. When to Schedule Clean-In-Place (CIP) Membrane Washing

Schedule a CIP wash when any of these 3 conditions occur:

1. Normalized permeate flow drops by 10% from initial baseline.

2. Normalized salt passage increases by 10% to 15% (higher permeate TDS).

3. Differential pressure across any membrane vessel array increases by 15%.
